That Day...by Shawn Claussen on 05/04/15
I had the privilege of shooting a steel match at the West Liberty Gun Club on 04/19/205 with my son Jacob and our friend Sonny. I was fortunate enough to take 1st Place Overall and 1st in the Rimfire Rifle Optics division. Even more impressive than that was Jake took 2nd Place Overall and 2nd in the Rimfire Rifle Optics division. Jake legitimately beat me on one stage and on 3 other stages he was within 15/100 of a second from my times. He is only 12 years old.
If you have children and are actively involved with their progress as humans, you have this goal for them to be better in life at everything, than you are. You want them to be smarter, faster, stronger, funnier, more empathetic, more humble and ultimately better looking ( Thank God that he has his mother's genes in this department so there is hope for him!) Jake has already surpassed me in most physical endeavors. His hard work and dedication have paid off for him and he has accomplished a lot in a relatively short period of time. He has had a goal of beating me in competition for some time now. I guess he can check that off the list.
Being the competitive SOB that I am, it is with bittersweet feelings that I have in regards to Jacob's accomplishment. While his goals are my goals, I now have to take a look at my performance and analyze where I am at as far as my current skill level. While no one wants to admit they are getting older and possibly one or a few steps behind on many different levels, this is the reality. So now the question begs itself, do I accept the reality or rededicate my efforts to overcome the limitation of age and work on improving my deteriorating skill sets? Those that know me already know what I have decided.
That Day is here...Congrats Jake on your accomplishment...It will be twice as hard next time:)
